With that said, the D8 visa is also known as the Portugal Digital Nomad visa and allows remote workers to establish in Portugal legally in an hassle free procedure designed to be a fast track procedure.

Portugal’s digital nomad visa (D8), officially called the “Residence visa for the exercise of  professional activity provided remotely outside the national territory”, is designed for working professionals.

“It’s an alternative to the existing ‘D7’ visa, a popular residency permit mostly aimed at retirees and “passive income” earners!!!”

The D8 visa was launched on October 30 of 2022, and was created after the Portuguese government amended immigration law in July of 2022.

Portugal offers a visa for non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and it’s aimed at digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers.

For a long time Portugal has attracted digital nomads, but most non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens obtained residency through the D7 or D2 visas and sometimes the golden visa. As a response to the popularity of Portugal among digital nomads, Portugal created this special new visa that’s specifically designed for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers.

The D8 is both a “temporary stay” and “residence visa” for digital nomads. The temporary stay option allows you to live in Portugal for up to 1 year. The residence visa option allows you to stay for up to 5 years, with the possibility of renewal or exchange for permanent residency after. After 5 years, you will also be able to apply for Portuguese citizenship.

Ideal for those that want to live in Portugal and obtain Portuguese citizenship.

Income Requirement:

Earn at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage (€3,280 p/month in 2024).

Citizenship: Yes (application possible after 5 years)
