Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa - D8 Visa

First I would like to say we are a Real Estate Brokerage and our business is strictly limited to serving our clients either buying | selling or renting property in  Portugal… This information is an accumulation of many years of experience working closely with our clients and trusted attorney, as well as accountant, and you  should always seek a Lawyer | Solicitor | Notary | Tax Attorney |  Accountant or other professional for legal advice and representation, as this information is not to be considered any form of legal advice, and additionally the tax or Visa | residency laws are subject to change.

With that said, under the D8 Visa, remote workers will be able to live and work in the country for up to 12 months.

To qualify, at this moment applicants must earn at least 3,040€ per month - four times Portugal’s minimum wage.

Portugal’s digital nomad visa (D8), officially called the “Residence visa for the exercise of  professional activity provided remotely outside the national territory”, is designed for working professionals.

“It’s an alternative to the existing ‘D7’ visa, a popular residency permit mostly aimed at retirees and “passive income” earners!!!”

The D8 visa was launched on October 30 of 2022, and was created after the Portuguese government amended immigration law in July of 2022.

To qualify, applicants must…

❖ Come from a country not in the EU or EEA (There are 30 EEA countries - The 27 EU Member States and Iceland | Liechtenstein and Norway);

❖ Be self-employed or employed by a company based outside Portugal;

❖ Earn at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage per month 760€ - 3,040€, and as of 2024 the monthly minimum wage will be 820€ so you will need to prove a monthly income of 3,280€;

“D7 visa holders only need to earn the Portuguese minimum wage of 760€ per month. However, these earnings must come from ‘passive’  income streams like pensions; rent or investments!!!”

You apply for Portugal’s digital nomad visa by showing proof of income for the last three months; and applicants must submit tax residency documents and a contract of employment (or proof of self-employment), and of course obtaining your NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) - Fiscal number and opening a bank account, which can all be done virtually at distance if you are not in Portugal.

You can apply at a Portuguese Consulate in your home country, or at Portugal's immigration agency, AIMA - Agência para a Integração e Migrações e Asilo (Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) - and is the only Visa process that is allowed to start in Portugal, so basically you can come to Portugal on a tourist Visa (Schengen Visa) with length of stay for 90 days, and within that time start process here in Portugal.

Portugal is very appealing for digital nomads… With its buzzing cities, rugged coastline, and relatively low cost of living, Portugal is extremely popular with digital nomads.

Portugal  frequently features in online listicles about ideal remote working  locations - and with good reason. The major cities feature an abundance of co-working spaces and the Country has the 17th fastest wifi in the world.

Major cities of Lisbon and Porto are perhaps the most popular destinations for  digital workers. In Ponta Do Sol, on the coast of Madeira Island, remote workers have set up a dedicated digital nomad village as well.
